Attracting Birds to Your Garden Bird Feeder

It is most beneficial to feed wild birds during the winter months when their natural food may be unavailable but shortages do occur at other times of the year. So putting food out for the wild birds at any time of year can help when there are shortages. During the breeding season a temporary shortage of food will affect the young fledglings so it is especially helpful to put out food for the birds at this time.

Feeding in the Spring and Summer

During the summer and especially when they are moulting, birds need high protein foods. Good examples to put in your feeder are raisins, currents, black sunflower seeds, grated cheese, meal worms, soaked sultanas and commercially prepared summer seed mixtures. You can also purchase mixes for insect loving wild birds.

For fruit eating birds put out grapes, bananas, apples or pears, suitably chopped into smaller pieces. Avoid the use of peanuts, bread or fats as they can be harmful if taken back to baby birds. Home made fat balls are not really a good idea as they quickly go off in the warm weather. Commercially prepared fat bars are better and last for around three weeks before they must be thrown away.

During unseasonably cold or wet weather there may insect shortages. If the weather is very dry earthworms become difficult to catch. For birds with young in the nest they will be tempted by food on bird tables during these times so it is essential to make sure any food you put out is suitable for the young birds. Never put out loose peanuts, large pieces of bread, fats or hard, dry food at this time as these can be fatal if taken back to feed the baby birds.

Feeding in the Fall and Winter

During the colder months put food out for the birds regularly, twice a day if possible, especially in very cold weather. The birds need high energy food during this time so foods high in fats are particularly suitable. Put out good quality food and remove any uneaten food regularly.

Attracting Birds to Your Feeder

You can attract different species of birds to your garden by providing the food they like in a suitable feeder. Large birds will need a feeder with large, sturdy perches, hummingbirds will be attracted to a nectar feeder, finches to a thistle feeder. You can also purchase goldfinch feeders, jay feeders and woodpecker feeders.

Life Insurance – Ensure The Correct Balance

Very few people have sufficient assets to enable them to plough along through life, without making provision for their dependents to continue with their present standard of living when the principal earner is gone. However there are many who seem to have delusions of immortality and keep putting off doing anything about it because they aren’t intending to go just yet. Those who cannot afford life insurance are in a very unfortunate position, but those who can afford it but will not get around to doing anything about it are gambling on the future of their families or other dependents.

The loss of a parent or other relative is traumatic enough, but to find out when life goes on after the loss that financial problems are going to be a major factor in life for the foreseeable future, is adding to the grief. So what is to be done? Well, the first action should be to draw up a simple balance sheet – what are your assets and what do you owe.

On the assets side of the sheet you should first of all put down your ‘ready cash’ items. Always remembering to allow as far as possible for any potential changes, the first items should be investments which can be cashed in at short notice. Then methodically work your way through longer term investments, not forgetting such items as life cover provided as a benefit of your employment. You should make a note if applicable if loss of job would lose this cover.

Once the cash side is completed, you move on to material possessions – your house value can be included but bear in mind that your dependants will have to have somewhere to live, so the full value will not be available. The same factor applies to household contents – you are unlikely to be fondly remembered for long by family members who cannot sit down because they had to sell the furniture! A holiday home and contents is not a necessity and the full realisable value could be included, as could the value of a caravan, boat or even a saleable timeshare.

Finally, on the credit side, include valuables such as jewellery, cameras, electrical items etc. but don’t allow yourself to be fooled over the possible value. The vase which your favourite aunt left to you some years ago may be reputed to have a considerable value but don’t rely on hearsay. Get it valued and then write that value down by 25% or more – the valuer may have been more enthusiastic about it than a potential buyer would be.

Now move onto your liabilities, remembering to allow as far as possible for future changes, i.e. have you had a loan which will be paid up in the near future, thus releasing more cash; alternatively are you likely to take out a new loan which would then commit a proportion of your cash to repayments? Do you have commitments which would cease on your death, such as a health protection plan?

When the above is completed why not take the opportunity to do something else which you have probably been procrastinating about for many years – make a will. Now you know what your assets are, why not ensure that they go to the people for whom they are intended – intestacy is a sure fire way to create problems for your family when you depart this life, so why not deal with it now?

You are now in a position to do your sums and decide how much life cover you need to enable your family to live more or less as they do at present. You should be able to arrive at a figure which will be as adequate as you can make it and affordable, but not excessive to the point that paying for it becomes a serious burden.

You have arrived at the point where you are likely to need expert help in drawing up the most suitable policy for your needs, so why not take the easy route (after all your hard work) and browse the internet for a suitable broker. Better still find 2 or 3 brokers and give yourself a choice when initial discussions have enabled you to form an opinion.

You can now settle into sorting out the fine detail, including the type of insurance which you require and the affordability of your intentions. There are a few different types of insurance available to you, each of which has a different cost. Term insurance for example, provides cover over a specified period, during which your death would trigger payment of the agreed sum; at the end of the term all cover ceases and a new policy would be taken out if required.

The type which historically was frequently employed for mortgage cover is the decreasing term policy, where the amount to be paid out gradually reduces by an agreed amount each year until the end of the term, when cover ceases. This type of policy is very much lower in cost due to the decreasing commitment, but don’t forget to allow something in the sum due for potential inflation.

See a broker, discuss your needs and rest assured that you have taken a major step for your family in reducing the trauma of your inevitable departure. At least it shouldn’t be financial worries that speed your end!

The Many Colors of Diamonds

Are you new to the diamond purchasing scene? If so, you are going to be faced with an overwhelming amount of choices. The following is an explanation of the different colors of diamonds now on the market.

First of all, you may not realize that there are over 10 solid color choices for natural diamonds. And each of the colors comes in different hues and shades, taking that number into the hundreds. Some are commonplace and very easy to find, while others are considered very rare.

Coloring in diamonds signifies impurities like nitrogen that can be found in some single-compound (carbon) diamonds. Although-diamonds that are not pure white are not necessarily flawed. In fact they may be considered rare, as in the case of purple, orange or red diamonds. In addition, any diamond that is not white can be referred to as “fancy” (if it possesses the right characteristics); as in a “fancy bright yellow diamond. “

White-A white diamond is not really white, it is almost translucent. White diamonds are colorless to near colorless; the clearer the diamond the higher the grade. White diamonds are the most common and signify elegance and stability.

Yellow-Commonly referred to as the canary diamond. Its yellow coloring varies from light to bright. These are rarer than white diamonds and more expensive.

Brown-These are sometimes referred to as Champagne or Chocolate in color, but with a definite light or dark brown tint. Brown can also be found combined with orange or yellow.

Grey-These are lustrous with a smoky coloring and are sometimes bluish-gray in color.

Blue-Blue diamonds have been sold for quite some time. They are considered elite and rare, and therefore much sought after.

Green-Relatively new to the market and green in color-but will not be mistaken for an emerald, as green diamonds are lighter in color than emeralds and sometimes have an olive tint.

Pink-The new white. Pink is very feminine and is also the color that is internationally recognized to be associated with Breast Cancer Awareness. You might score some knowledge and caring points by going Pink.

Orange-Orange diamonds can be very intense and vibrant in color or combined with brown, pink or red.

Red-The rarest color of all diamonds is the red diamond. Not many have been classified as fancy, as most are combined with pink, orange, or purple.

Violet/Purple-Generally lighter in color and can be found in combination with pink diamonds.

Black-Black diamonds appear to be black and lustrous, but are really a shade lighter than true black.

When you are purchasing diamonds keep in mind that the colors above refer to natural colors. However, diamonds can be artificially colored. Be sure to ask the jeweler if you are purchasing a natural colored diamond or one that’s color has been enhanced. Also, it is not unusual to find diamonds that have color combinations such as a fancy orange/brown or purple/pink.

Now that you know that diamonds come in every color of the rainbow, you will need to focus on the recipient of the diamond. Choose a color that suits the needs and wants of the person who will be wearing the diamond. No matter which color that you choose for that special person, make sure that you buy something that will complement their personality and physical characteristics.

Back in 2000 when I was looking for my first car, I decided to buy my Subaru because it was neat and compact, with a small engine and low running costs. I was just out of university, struggling along in my first job, and the second-hand three-door little car was the best I could manage at the time.

Although I’ve since moved on from that job and am now paid a respectable salary, out of some bizarre kind of loyalty to my first car – which, in all fairness, has never caused me any great problems – I refused to sell my Subaru and kept it as its value depreciated and it became less and less practical. But since it continued to run, I also reasoned that there was no reason to look for a new car, employing the maxim, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ I don’t do many long journeys so didn’t feel justified in shelling out for a new car, with all the the associated financial and environmental costs. I figured I’d just run it into the ground and hold onto it for as long as I could.

I decided to sell my Subaru Impreza when I took it into the garage for its last service. When I realised that the money I would need to spend on it over the next couple of years to ensure it kept passing its MOTs would be greater than the value of the car itself, I bit the bullet and looked for a Subaru buyer. Selling my Subaru was a sorry decision but it made no sense to keep pouring cash into a car that was ultimately destined for the scrap heap – I might as well cut my losses and buy a newer car that would need less maintenance and would, in the long term, save me money.

I used the classified ads in the local paper both to sell my Subaru and look for a new car. It was a new experience for me; I had bought my first car from a family friend as I knew he was giving me a good deal and it would be in good condition, so I’d never had to negotiate the endless questions of model, age, space, safety record, fuel efficiency, price and colour that confronted me when I scanned the listings. In the end I decided my requirements (five door hatchback, no more than five years old), and made a set of fairly arbitrary decisions to narrow it down further.

I had several inquiries from people wanting to buy my Subaru, though one or two were put off when they saw it. I did everything I could (within reason) to make it more attractive, from the obvious clean and polish to replacing the worn old windscreen wipers and filling it with petrol as an incentive. I finally found my Subaru buyer – a student looking for a first car, who wasn’t too worried about the long-term potential as long as it got her to the end of her course. I felt it had found its rightful home and was pleased that I’d managed to get something for it, even if it wasn’t much.

Everyone says they never have enough time. Each day we are faced with dozens of tasks to complete and it is inevitable that we cannot complete every one of them. We only have so much time in a day and we have to do what we can which is why time management is such an important skill to understand.

For many of us time is a crucial issue but many of the tasks we set ourselves can be done tomorrow or even next week. Some tasks are very time sensitive and have to be done on time. If you are a student you cannot decide to deliver your work when you feel like it. If there is a date for project to be completed by, handing it in a week later will not be very helpful.

Students need to understand and be fully aware of time management skills. They need to be able to avoid the distractions of student social life and concentrate on work when work must be done. Planning and setting a schedule makes the difference between haphazard and disorganized working and an organized flow of work done properly and on time. Without planning you may feel overwhelmed and even incompetent.

Plan your work schedule and allow a reasonable amount of time for research and writing up your interpretation and results. Stick to the plan. You could spend a lifetime researching any individual aspect of your work but for now you have to cover a lot of topics. Allocate an amount of time and stick with the schedule.

Time management for students enables them to enjoy free time happy in the knowledge that they are on schedule and will get finished on time. Without a plan there is always doubt and concern about the eventual outcome of the work you are doing. A proper schedule allows you to have a little leeway and adapt so you can spend more time on certain parts of your work if you need to allocate more time to it.

Time management and scheduling of work is not a task to be taken lightly. It is important and it enables you to enjoy your free time knowing the work is on schedule and will be completed on time. Those who play it by ear will find themselves rushing as the deadline approaches while you relax and enjoy yourself.

Many homeowners may find the internet to be of great use when conducting refinance attempt. It is helpful because it provides homeowners with an array of information. It equips homeowners with an ability to submit loan applications as well as to receive estimates online. It is also easier for homeowners to check against complicated mathematical equations with ease by using various tools available. While it can be a home owners’ best friend, it can also be a worst enemy. Homeowners who make reference to online resources should use it with care. Also, this article is to provide homeowners with helpful information on types of information available online along with hints to verify trustworthy internet sources.

Researching the Internet

However you may refer to is the WWW or the internet, there lies undenying fact that our society has changed completed because of it. A couple of years ago, refinancing business must be done largely during business hours only by conferring with the financial experts. However, it is no longer a case right now.

A greatest advantage new generation homeowners have over their forefathers is the ability to find information regarding refinancing options and even obtaining quotes online in a lesser time. Even the great deal of refinancing still involves complicated mathematical equations and calculation, and since these equations have been automated, homeowners can simply reap from this simplicity by entering a few known inputs to solve the unknowns and they are readily accessible no matter from where you are. Each of the available calculations is not programed in the same fashion, thus homeowners should employ a couple of calculators to determine an estimated range of solutions.

Apart from finding information and utilizing mortgage calculators, the Internet can also be used to find quotes. Homeowners are able to fill out simple forms with only a couple of pieces or relevant information and loaners are able to contact the homeowner with information about the types of refinancing alternatives and interest rates they may be able to offer to the homeowner.

Choosing dependable Sources Online

The Internet is made full with helpful information. However, the Internet is also filled with wrong information. Homeowners should be aware of this fact and should avoid using the Internet entirely in the research process. This will enable the homeowner to independently verify the information they find online.

One possibility homeowners can avoid confrontation with misleading information is to choose only trustworthy websites on the refinancing industry. To differentiate between misleading websites and reputable is not an easy task. Nowadays, website design can be done easily and looking professional. However, the appearance of website has nothing to do with trustworthy and quality in line with its contents. Even the most respectful websites may contain misleading information, intentional or unintentional but it often occurs when the website owner is quite knowledgeable about website design but is very knowledgeably about the subject or re-financing.

One way to avoid the possible action of being misinformed on the Internet is to rely exclusively on websites maintained by well known lenders or financial institution. Often the ownership of the website may be difficult to decipher but many well recognized financial institutions use their name as their domain name and optimize their website for keywords related to their name. This is done to ensure those who search for their name will be directed to their website.

Proceed with Care on the Internet

It is always wise to use caution when involved in Internet activities. As previously talked about, this implies verifying the information received on a particular website. This may be done by using independent resources for instance, published books or conferring with financial advisors to confirm the Internet research.

In addition, homeowners should be cautious about giving away sensitive information like full name, address or social security number. This type of information should only be given to sources which are deemed to be reputable.

College football attracts millions of fans nationwide, especially come football season. Rivalries between schools are fierce, with a lot of school spirit and thrashing and bashing between students broadcast live on national television. This is why watching the game and keeping updated about football matches excites a lot of viewers especially the alumni and those who associate themselves with a particular school, usually the one that represents their state. College football is almost as exciting as the National Football League (NFL). As with professional football, everyone has their own favorite team. Throughout history, however, there are undoubtedly better teams than others who have played their way to the top. After all, football can be measured objectively through scores and points just like most any other sport. When it comes to greatness, the stats say it all. Below are some of the greatest football teams in college football history.

1971 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The 1971 Cornhuskers are considered to be one of the best college football teams to ever exist. There is little disagreement on the greatness of this team, just looking at its offense which averages more than 39 points a game and surrenders only 8.2 points a game. Led by kick and punt returner Johnny Rodgers, who not surprisingly won the 1972 Heisman Trophy, the 1972 Cornhuskers won over Oklahoma who was ranked No.2 at that time with a record of 35-31 during Thanksgiving Day. The 1972 Cornhuskers-Oklahoma game has been dubbed as the “Game of the Century.” The Cornhuskers finished that season with a record of 13-0 and a 38-6 drubbing in the Orange Bowl against Alabama.

1972 USC Trojans

When the 1972 season ended, the USC Trojans finished with an incredible 12-0 record, which just shows how successful this team was. They defeated Ohio State in the Rose Bowl with a score of 42-17 under the guidance of head coach John McKay. That season, the Trojans were named No. 1 in all media polls and ballots.

1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The 1995 Nebraska had it all, a great offense and a great defense. It was no wonder that they were able to defeat four teams in the Top 10 by no fewer than 23 points. They also had an impeccable running attack in Lawrence Phillips and Ahman Green. The 1995 season was their second straight national championship, winning the Fiesta Bowl against Florida with a 62-24 score.

1945 Army Black Knights

That year, the Black Knights teamed up with the armed services and the Allies to win World War II and went on to a fall campaign with tailback Glenn Davis and fullback Felix “Doc” Blanchard. Both players won the much coveted Heisman Trophy, Blanchard in 1945 when he ran 718 yards and 19 TDs, and Davis in 1946. The Army finished the season with a 9-0 record. They defeated Notre Dame with a 48-0 score and trounced the Pennsylvania Quakers by 61-0.

2001 Miami Hurricanes

The 2001 Miami Hurricanes had unbelievably good players who were all first-draft selections in the 2002 NFL Draft: All-American quarterback Ken Dorsey, offensive tackle Bryant “Mount” Mckinnie, running back Clinton Portis, cornerbacks Mike Rumph and Phillip Buchanon, wide receiver Jeremy Shockey, and safety Edward Reed.

The Mummy Track

Last century’s commentators’ spoke of women staring at the “glass ceiling” where their drive and avidity for the top jobs were restricted by the dominance of workplace discrimination and culture. Today, however, things are changing: hundreds of resilient women do make it into the boardroom, flourishing in the senior roles in both the private and public sector and shatter the glass ceiling into tiny, dismissible shards.

The battle is no longer against rigid prejudice; it appears women have to fight to get themselves off the “mummy track” where they are sidelined in the workplace. Should women have to respond to the ultimatum of family or career?

Each year, over 30,000 jobs are lost to pregnancy and maternity – resulting in a staggering £23b impact on the economy. In addition to this blow, women are continuing to work well below their potential and paying a heavy price for taking time out when having children. A large majority are greeted with open discrimination, and although we are aware of the illegalities and repercussions, tens of thousands cannot return to their existing roles for the simple reason of being a mother. Suddenly the ultimatum is a stark indication of the choices women have to make in life, or more importantly, how ruthless they have to be in order to have one.

Women also face the insidious discrimination characterised by Alan Sugar’s comments that employers should be allowed to question women about the dynamic of their family life. It is alarming to think there are organisations that choose not to appoint women of childbearing age. If Sir Alan makes his personnel decisions on whether women will leave their positions within a year to create a family, then what is he to do next? Strap hidden cameras to their outer garments to monitor if Mothercare are receiving frequent visits, or scrutinise all female employees in the canteen to observe shifts in diets; random trips to the toilet or worse still, quiz them on methods of protection?

A notable key factor is the change that occurs in mothers’ employment patterns after having a baby. Research by The Women and Work Commission (WWC) highlighted that while 63% of mothers were working full-time before the birth, this dropped to 34% after the birth. The gender pay gap also means that women working full-time are already paid an average 17% an hour less than men and this increases to 36% if they work part-time.

In October of this year, The European Commission proposed extending fully-paid maternity leave from 14 to 18 weeks and stated that longer maternity leave would encourage women to return to work after having children. They also accept that over two-thirds of mothers returning to work after a significant amount of time away from their working routine are anxious about being less able to do their job. Never before has the title of mother and occupation merged with such hostility, but this doesn’t have to be the case. The more reputable and conscious employers have taken huge steps in retaining women after maternity and are flexible towards working patterns, without having to sustain loss of money or repute.

Witan Jardine is a specialist recruitment agency in London, covering finance, banking and marketing disciplines, who not only possess a diverse pool of candidates, but recognise the need in helping women who are returning from maternity to top level careers.

“Creating a family friendly culture that allows for flexible working patterns will go a long way to encourage women to return to work after maternity,” says Omar Akram, People & Development Director at Witan Jardine. “Women need to feel supported both during pregnancy and afterwards. Employers who fail to meet these criteria run the risk of losing some of their most talented female employees”.

Has the Internet Changed Recruitment?

The voices that echo around the recruitment industry provide mixed subjectivity when asked about the future of online recruitment. The birth of Internet recruitment sites at the turn of the millennium generated significant debate and one question rose loud and clear from the rest: Is the Internet fundamentally changing the relationship between the client and recruitment agency?

Like many industries in early 2000, recruitment was adjusting itself for a new digital era. Commentators envisaged Internet recruitment would, in essence, eliminate the middle man; the industry would suffer from ‘disintermediation’ as it was rather awkwardly labelled.

By the time 2002 had arrived, the same people were forecasting that online and traditional procedures could co-habit the same space. In 2003, this confident and audacious prediction proved to be incorrect and the Internet had changed the way candidates not only searched for jobs, but applied for them. Businesses were also realising that this was a useful medium and began to advertise internal vacancies online and receive online applications. Arguably, online recruitment (or ‘job surfing’) is now as popular as internet shopping and e-banking.

“The question of control remains at the forefront”, says Jeremy Caplan, European Marketing Director for Monster.com. “HR directors want to be able to track all the candidates coming through different jobsites and screen them as they would if receiving paper applications. Increasingly sophisticated software – improving all the time - can now meet those tailored needs.”

David Taylor, e-entrepreneur, writer and broadcaster disagrees: “The Internet has singularly failed to deliver the potential it promised. The medium will only have arrived when we cease to talk about the Internet and start talking about what we are doing on it. Transactions are now faster and the Internet has increased the reach of those using it, but the landscape still looks the same. The internet is very much part of our lives, particularly online job hunting, but it has not replaced any other medium – it is just another ‘dial tone’”.

And, the Internet has certainly not eliminated recruitment agencies as predicted. Far from original conjectures, only those who either invested too much money or none at all into the Internet – at the expense of their core services – have plunged into recruitment oblivion.

“Recruiters still suffer image problems”, Taylor continues. “They are perceived as the estate agents of business. Post September 11th saw a global shift in how recruitment agencies, and a multitude of other industries, embraced their existing relationships with both client and candidate. Recruitment companies need ethical foundations to promote their values and align with this high demand.”

Witan Jardine are a specialist recruitment agency, covering finance, banking and marketing disciplines, with offices in London, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. With over 29 years’ industry experience, they have not only seen, but conquered the expectations surrounding the future of online recruitment.

“Online recruitment has contributed positively to the recruitment process”, says James Callard, Marketing Manager at Witan Jardine. “It has enabled recruiters to access a wider pool of talent more quickly and forced recruitment consultancy’s to improve the quality of their recruitment services to both clients and candidates alike, in order to meet the demands of finding the right person for the job. The human element is still very much key in this process.”

So, possibly personality, not technology, is victorious. Emotion must be put back into the emotive process of recruitment. Undeniably, the Internet can be personalised to meet individual needs, but it can’t compensate communication between candidate and company. Communication drives every business and without this engine, the motor in any organisation would simple break down. The Internet is here to stay, but it still has a long way to go in order to compete with good old fashioned face-to-face communication.
