Adubarey and the missing sharks in the Maldives

The Minister of Environment, Energy and Water is apparently expressing concern over the declining of shark sighting in the Maldives, according to some local reports. The ministry is blaming commercial and recreational fishing worldwide for the decline. Sadly, the minister, fondly known as Adubarey is ignoring that the problem is not very far from his own doorstep.

The regime of Dictator Gayyoom in the Maldives is known for being lethargic and short sighted when it comes to the conservation of marine life and its environment. This is despite the fact that the dictator claims to be a Champion, rather Father of Environment. In fact, SHARKPROJECTS, an international NGO for the research and conservation of sharks, awarded the Maldives “Shark-Enemy of the Year Award” in 2003. The award was handed over to the former Tourism Minister Hassan Sobir. According to SHARKPROJECTS, the situation for the Maldivian sharks had become worse since then.

According to Marine Research experts, there exists a draft law to prohibit shark fishing and trading nationwide. However, it has been on the shelf and no one has been bothered about it, apart from NGOs such as SHARKPROJECT. The existing law only prohibits shark fishing in Atolls where there are tourist resorts. However, sadly, sharks are not known for differentiating between tourist and local Atolls!

Experts are convinced that mass fishing of sharks as is the case in the Maldives will destabilise the marine ecosystem, leading to severe consequences, such as the destruction of coral reefs.

The photos below were taken earlier this year in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi at a fish processing plant there. According to researchers and campaigners, thousands of sharks are killed each year across the Maldives and no one keeps track of the statistics nor is anyone monitoring these activities and analysing its impact on the marine environment.
