If you dream of managing high technology projects in the software or telecom domains popular today, be prepared for difficult training while working to reach your dream. It is rarely possible to work in these domains without proper certification. The certification awarded by the Project Management Institute as a project management profession stands head and shoulders above the rest.

There are a number of prerequisites you must meet prior to applying for “Project Management Profession” certification. If you have completed college, you must have at least three years of post-graduate experience in a related field. During these three years you are required to have spent at least 4,500 hours actually coordinating and leading projects. If you didn’t go to college, or didn’t complete your course of study, you can still apply for certification provided you have seven years of related work experience. During those seven years you must have spent at least 7,500 hours coordinating and leading projects.

To become a certified Project Management Professional you must undergo a lengthy process of education, workshops and evaluations. During this process, you must demonstrate a thorough knowledge the areas of project management technology, project risk management, project activity scheduling and project quality management. It is recommended that you apply methodologies such as SCRUM, JIT and Agile Project Management to the practice of managing projects.

After studying the previous topics, you can naturally transition to developing competence in the standardized fields required by the Project Management Institute. This is quite a simple task to accomplish, since you possess the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), which was mailed to you as soon as your application for certification was received.

It’s a good idea to participate as much as possible when attending workshops and formalized training sessions, as well as online training courses offered by accredited institutions. These businesses validate their courses and have been recognized by the Project Management Institute, so these courses will give you credits and also provide hands-on experience and expertise.

When you’re taking the test, try not to stress about the passing criteria. The advantage of a test based on Angoff and Nedelsky evaluation methods is that it takes into account both your individual marks and the average score of the other test takers - so if you found the test to be difficult even after diligent studying, odds are your fellow candidates are having similar difficulties and scores will reflect that. And when you pass the test, you’ll be rewarded with the title “Project Management Professional”.

If you want to manage high technology projects in telecommunications or software, you will require a great deal of training to be successful. You will need proper certification to be seriously considered for such positions. The Project Management Institute offers the Project Management Professional certification that will fulfill your needs. In order for you to become certified, you will need to complete the recognized program of validated education, workshops and evaluations. You will need to be able to prove your expertise with project management technology, project risk management, project activity scheduling, project quality management, and in other program areas.

Making Business Travel Fun

Some people love to travel, even if it’s for business. But for most of us, business travel can really be a pain. It always seems to happen when you don’t think you can fit one more thing into your schedule or when you have just gotten back from another business trip. But there are some positive things about business travel.

What makes business travel such a pain? The first thing I think of when I think of business travel is “airports”. They certainly are not my favorite place to be with lines, crowds, and delays. But you can make the airport experience a bit better if you use the technology that’s available to you. Some airlines provide electronic kiosks where you can check in and get your boarding pass instead of waiting in the long line for baggage check.

The first tip is to pack only what you really need, not what you want. Most hotels will provide many essentials like shampoo and conditioner and a hair dryer. No need to lug any of that from home. I like to pack sample sizes of other things like toothpaste and I buy a travel toothbrush for the trip - the one that folds up and takes virtually no room. Then I toss it and don’t worry about trying to pack a soggy toothbrush to take home. If you work at this you can reduce your packing to no more than an overnight sized bag and PC case (get a big one where you can stuff more items in it).

Never arrive at a destination completely ignorant of where you are at (the airport relative to the city). I often map simple paths out from Google maps and feel comfortable when I get into a cab that I know where I’m going.

When you travel work in a little personal enjoyment. Ask the hotel help about good restaurants nearby to your hotel. If you are in a foreign land, sample some of the local cuisine. Even in more mundane locations, someone who lives locally may be willing to go to dinner with you and they’ll likely know where the great local restaurants are.

If you don’t have someone to escort you around town, don’t just have dinner in the hotel. Ask the hotel employees for suggestions, hail a cab, and get out on the town. Seeing the local sights and tasting the local fare can be once in a lifetime events.

Business travel can be inconvenient, but take the opportunity to learn something new and see another part of our great world.

A project management training class interests a large number of people, either to develop their careers or to apply directly to their own businesses. The demand for project managers, as reported by the US Department of Labor projects, is expected to exceed the supply for the next several years–which means they are in great demand. Bonuses are commonplace, and pay is typically $50 to $100 per hour, and can be even more in some specialty areas.

Specialized training in project management is an excellent way to improve opportunities you may have in your career even if you already have a degree. There are various specialty concentrations that are sure to fit nearly every interest or background. Software project management training would be a good choice to build skills in computer applications and resources for those with a more technical interest. Those individuals would look for classes that teach project management basics that focus on the unique demands of software development.

If you have an engineering or construction background, you may want to pursue construction management project training. There is high demand for those with the right skills and experience, and the salaries are in line with the demand. It also offers you the opportunity to get out from behind the desk, especially if you don’t desire to be stuck in an office or cubicle, as the work involved will normally involve time to be spent on site overseeing the project.

Construction management project training programs can take place as part of a college degree program, or in a traditional classroom. Some business colleges, community colleges or training institutions may offer it as one of their programs. This is the best way some people prefer and learn best in this way.

Construction management project training courses are available through several different education formats. May schools offer, on-job-training; Degree programs (two-year associate degree; four-year baccalaureate degree, graduate degree); and continuing education / professional development. Training facilities for these programs offer classes in a traditional classroom setting, online, or a combination of both in class and online depending on the specific class offered.

When selecting a construction management project training program, certification potential is good indicator its value. If the course prepares you for project manager certification by one of the national credentialing bodies, then it is likely to provide the necessary tools for success, whether or not you actually seek the credential.

A credential in project management is as good as money in the bank and makes a great hedge against future changes in the job market. Project managers that are good at assessing needs, providing oversight, and evaluation will always be in demand. Project management is not only a financially rewarding career, but one in which the manager can gain satisfaction from seeing the tangible results of his work.

A construction management project training program can be in a conventional classroom or part of a college degree program. To build skills in computer applications and resources for those with a more technical interest software project management training could be a good choice. Many people are looking for a project management training class, both for its application to their current jobs and for potential career advancement. The United States Department of Labor estimates that demand for project managers will be greater than the supply for at least the next seven years.

Public Access to Court Records

Friday

by Jacques S Eskena (aka SavvyBusiness)

With 60 % of all new businesses failing to make it past the first year, everybody knows that risk taking is an integral part of running a business. Taking steps to ensure that such risks are measured takes an even greater importance when considering that if 1 an every 4 businesses fail in the first year, the figure reaches court records proportions over the course of 5 years when it becomes 3 out of 5!

But whilst every business owner is usually fully aware of the above figures few realize that other internal factors, as related to the very nature of their specific business can dramatically add to the risk factor.

Not only do businesses have to have things right when it comes to their assessment and consideration of risks emanating from outside forces, but often times little consideration is given to the fact that workers or employees may be a risk themselves if for example they drive cars for the company or operator heavy equipment or machinery.

And it is not just in-situ that these types of risk can take place. Any business that has an interactive relationship between its employees and its customers runs a risk when an employee’s mistake takes place. For example, a company that sends employees to the home of its customers sees these risks extended outside of its walls and it is not just the risks that are compounded but the actual nature of said risks!

Indeed in such instances, a single mistake, a bad decision, a poor judgment can have dire consequences as well as raising liability insurance premiums to a level that the company might find difficult to cope with.

What this means is that the action of one employee has significant on many different levels including customer relation and or potential litigation costs.

Whilst it is impossible for anyone to anticipate and take appropriate measures every steps of the way, just imagine the additional hassles the business would face if it turned out that the “careless” employee was in fact someone who should have been checked more thoroughly when first hired!

What if this person had a history of poor decision making or worse court records that indicate a less than perfect past! The tragedy in this instance would of course be compounded by the fact that this could have been a totally avoidable situation, and indeed should never have had to take place in the first instance.

As such finding out about eventual court records are an essential and indispensable tool for any serious business owner even though this subject elicits unease and discomfort in a society which takes privacy of its citizen extremely seriously!

But we do live in a world ripe with litigation lawyers and lawsuits and the risks of damages imposed by a court to a company who has been found guilty of negligence or worse can mean the death of that company as a business.

After all, the idea here is not only to protect the business owner’s investment and business but also to ensure that the rest of the workforce are not adversely affected by the actions of a single person who should never have been hired in the first place. Court records then become essential for the job security of all other workers.

Five Easy Steps to Project Delegation

Thursday

The Practice of Delegation

Not long ago I was working at my desk and realized that it was so late that it was actually the regular work day for my team in Asia. Unfortunately, this was common. I had begun working so many hours, that I was actually working two shifts (US and Asia). I was growing increasingly frustrated with the project and with my team. The team however was bewildered by my reaction. They were doing everything I assigned to them. What could I be upset about?

I had fallen into a common trap. I thought I was delegating, but really I was just assigning tasks and not relinquishing ownership. It was during one of these marathon work sessions that I realized I needed to make big changes to how I was working. I looked at when projects worked, seemingly without my intervention, and when they didn’t. Once I broke it down, the solution jumped out clearly. There are five steps to successful delegation.

1. First, clearly define the task. What is it that needs to happen? What’s the desired result?

2. Second, select the team or the individual that you want to accomplish this result.

3. Third, tell the individual what’s being delegated to them. It’s also important to let other people in the organization know that this person is now responsible for the task, so they know not to keep coming to you about it.

4. Maintain a monitoring system, so you can ensure that they’re not getting off-track.

5. After the task is done, complete a final review. Look at lessons learned and ways to improve moving forward.

The steps above are logical enough - the key is putting them into practice. I started immediately with the project that caused so many work hours for me. I looked at my Asia team to determine who had the ability to lead the team on-site and drive the deliverables per the plan. Before assigning the team member the task, I set clear objectives and goals. Successful delegation requires a clear end result. And everybody needs to understand what results are expected.

I selected Helen for the role. She had the skills necessary as well a willingness to take on more responsibilities. After I determined the right person, I knew I had to give her the authority she needed to meet her objective. This is an important point since you can’t expect success without a willingness to give up some authority. You also can’t just delegate it and walk away. You may need to teach new skills and also ensure that the rest of the team understands this shift in ownership.

After you’ve delegated, you need to monitor progress. Make sure that there are some scheduled goals and meetings to ensure that tasks are being completed. I usually do this in a 1:1 meeting. This is a time for us to talk about upcoming due dates and milestones as well as anything that may be of concern. Provide feedback and, if necessary, direction. Give your team clear objectives and goals and then provide encouragement to keep them on track. Boosting morale helps make sure that people are making progress. A good way to do this is by monitoring milestones.

Often, it helps to create a series of small, interim deliverables that will serve as checks-and-balances on the progress of a larger task. These milestones can then be used as a basis for progress reports (1:1 sessions).

What happens when you do have problems? You need to learn to manage by exception. When it comes to delegating, you need to keep it organized. Make sure you know where they are and that they know and can track their milestones. In my case, when Helen started slipping on a key deliverable, we worked closely together until she was back on track. It was difficult for me, personally, because I just wanted to fix it. In the short term, it would have been much faster to simply fix it and hand it back. However, I wanted Helen to retain authority over the Asia team - this required her to find the solution and implement it. How?

Structure. If the people you’re delegating to are having trouble, help them, train them. Establish the monitoring systems we talked about. Have milestones in place that will keep the task on track. Make sure they know that if they run into a problem, they can contact you. This may seem like extra effort but it will be short term and the long term benefits are many, including not only the deliverable at risk, but the entire delegated ownership and, who knows - bigger and better projects in the future. As for Helen, she overcame the short term concern and the project went on to deliver on time. Even better, I was back to just working the USA day shift!

Performance and deliverables are, ultimately, in your control. Are you ready to make it happen? Go to http://www.delegatesuccess.com and take the readiness quiz.

All businesses are looking to continually increase their profits, and the cut-throat competition between businesses means that this is always a difficult task. Good managers can provide a competitive edge, which is why businesses put so much effort into finding good managers and why they compensate them with six-figure salaries and substantial perks.

New billion dollar companies are cropping up all over the global economic community. Every country in the world is anxious to be a part of the trend of economic progress. We constantly read about new developments in fields such as aviation, engineering, and finance. Companies everywhere are realizing that in order to gain or maintain status in the global financial picture they need to have well-trained employees.

By reading the newspaper or surfing the Internet you’ll find stories about billion-dollar corporations which have risen to the top in only a few year’s time. As hard as it may be to believe, your business can find the same success. In order emulate this outstanding growth your company needs to utilize professional guidance and a systematic approach.

Managers with a degree from top tier business schools are in high demand by multi-national companies. However, one should not assume that this formal education is sufficient to be successful in this new role. One can expect a business degree to provide general principles to complement the thorough in-house training program provided to teach the specific subtleties of the employer’s business.

Of course, hands on experience is more helpful in many business situations than abstract theory. Because of this many companies employ the services of a business coach to train their workers. Good business coaches are needed almost everywhere. Even high level employees, like entrepreneurs and CEO’s, can benefit from this type of coaching.

Without any overstatement, having competently constructed business coaching is critical for any organization to be truly competitive. Coaches do more than teach basic skills including increasing awareness of international patterns and climates of operation. In fact, training is so emphasized in companies doing international business that they are quite willing to spend huge sums to business coaches to properly equip and educate their workforces.

Fierce competition between companies compels every business to take all possible measures to surpass its competitors. One way to gain an edge is to streamline the business. To do this, companies will offer extreme compensation packages including high base pay and perks to attract efficient managers. Many areas of business require practical knowledge more than theoretical knowledge. Great business coaches are in high demand as professionals, entrepreneurs, and even CEO’s want to hire them. Without any overstatement, having competently constructed business coaching is critical for any organization to be truly competitive.

The most common use of bar code scanners, and the one that most people are aware of, is the scanning of groceries at a grocery store. At the teller the bar code of each package is run past a barcode scanner that tells the system what the item is. The stock control system then feeds back item details and price information to the teller. The cost is automatically added to your bill.

At the same time the stock control system records the fact that you have purchased a can of soup or box of cereal, and the inventory tally maintained in the central database is reduced to reflect the fact that someone has purchased one of these items. Inventory control is more or less automatic, assuming that all the data was input correctly in the first place.

Consider a practical example of using this system. Suppose you own a small business, and are tracking inventory manually. You would typically total up your sales at the end of the day and update your records. This is a time-consuming and unreliable process. The use of a bar code system allows you to automatically update your stock control database each time an item is added or removed.

Such a system can even create unique bar codes for items that do not already have them. For new items a unique bar code is generated by the software, and then a bar code printer is used to print a bar code label that is then affixed to the item.

Here are the three most popular types of bar code scanners currently in use:

1. The Wand Scanner - The most basic type of bar code scanner is the “wand”. This is a pen-type scanner that needs to be kept in contact with the bar code when scanning it. The wand emits a light which is reflected off the bar code and then decoded by the system to identify the item.

It is necessary to keep a wand scanner in touch with the UPC code while scanning it. The wand scanner, which is a pen-like scanner, is the simplest type of UPC scanner. It gives off a light that reflects off the UPC code, which in turn is decoded by the POS system to recognize the product.

There are limitations to wand scanners, however. The wand needs to be held at a fairly specific angle when pointed at the barcode in order for it to scan properly. Also, the speed with which it is moved across the barcode can’t be too fast or too slow. Additionally, there is a limit to the resolution of every barcode wand scanner. The scanner will not be able to read properly any barcode that has a resolution that is significantly smaller than the scanner itself. For example, a 5 mil barcode cannot be read using a 10 mil wand. When in the market for a wand scanner, it is important that this isn’t forgotten.

2. The CCD Scanner - CCD (charged coupled device) technology is the next least expensive bar code scanning system. Like the wand scanner, CCD readers must be in direct contact with the bar code label in order to read it. But unlike the wand, there is no need to move the device across the label. The operator simply presses the reader against the label and pulls the trigger. The bar code is then photographed, digitized and decoded by the system.

Of all the various types of bar code scanners, CCD readers tend to be the simplest to use. CCD readers can be found in widths from 2 to 4 inches and, while they are more expensive than a wand, CCD readers are less expensive than laser scanners.

A promising new technology similar to CCD is called FFO (Fixed Focus Optics). These scanners are non-contact readers, which means they can read bar codes from as much as 20″ away. They will also be able to read two-dimensional bar codes as they become more popular.

3. Laser Scanners - A beam of light is used by a laser scanner in order to scan the bar code label. Instead of moving the scanner you move the bar code across the scanner. The scanner does not have to actually touch the bar code label in order to read it. The scanner will automatically read the scan whenever a bar code is held in front of it.

Such a system has benefits in a variety of situations. For instance, because the scans are accomplished with great speed, it is possible to embed laser scanners inside of conveyor systems. When items pass by rapidly, scanning takes place automatically. In a retail environment, the clerk merely moves each item over the glass to engage the scan. Such a system can easily keep pace with a clerk who simply moves objects from one side of the scanner to the other other. Laser systems are much more rapid and accurate than any other widely-used alternative.

When choosing a bar code scanner and an inventory control system, it is important to take into consideration the ability to adapt new scanning technologies to your system as they become available. This will allow you to keep your system updated without having to upgrade or replace the entire system in the future.

You need to know how to manage people if you want to succeed in life. Many people only earn normal wages. They are the ones who just get by. Others make enough to travel first class, stay in five-star hotels and live the good life. Luck may play a part in their success. It is not the whole answer, however. Other factors are involved.

Our daily life is full of management. During the early years of a man, he knows something about the craft of management. In a game of soccer with his friends, the child follows management rules weather he knows it or not.

Throughout life people need management. We can observe this when we go out to eat, and take note how the waiting staff adhere to specific management guidelines. And when we simply cross the road, we follow management rules. A definition of management can be the procedure by which we manage others.

Business firm managers have to take responsibility over the entire workforce. Because of this, they must have a sound management system, otherwise the whole workforce could go haywire. There is no real way that a manager can interact with each and every employee, so they must take advantage of some kind of tool or system that can make the complex tasks of management more simple.

Management software is absolutely key to driving a multi-national business as it expands its operations and develops an efficient work force. Coordination of business activities requires a significant amount of skill and effort. Companies must demonstrate their organizational strength in order to expand into new markets and acquire a larger client base.

The term management software refers to all aspects of budget, project, and human resource management. Training is vital in order to understand all the aspects of the management software. Management coaching will help managers fully understand the processes involved. With the aid of a computer and management software, along with knowledge gained in coaching sessions, a manager would be well equipped to run the business.

Management is associated with our day to day life. The process of managing people is one way to define management. Business firm managers must consider the needs of their total work force. A sound management system is necessary to make everything run smoothly. Business processes ask for high levels of concentration and dexterity. Keeping on top of budgets and deadlines, as well as understanding available resources, is key to managing well. Managers who want to understand business processes strategically would find management coaching indispensable. It includes teaching familiarity with management software using a computer.
