How would you love to eat everything you desire and never sweat again? Does that sound appealing? Scientists are actually working on an exercise pill that could make that possible! This amazing new pill could make us immune to weight gain and give us the benefits of athletic training, all while we sit in front of the television.
You might think these impressive results are right out of a science fiction book, but they’re actually taking place as you read this article! Of course, the only beneficiaries right now are mice, but one day, humans could benefit from these amazing findings too. Imagine being fit, without working for it!
Two different drugs were used in this experiment, AICAR and GW1516. Dr. Ronald Evans, a molecular physiologist with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and professor at Salk Institute’s Gene Expression Laboratory recently released his preliminary results.
GW1516 is a compound currently being used in research aimed at raising HDL levels, for the purpose of providing humans with higher levels of good cholesterol. Dr. Evans used this drug on exercise-trained mice and discovered that it improved their running distance and time by over 65%!
Sedentary mice received the drug AICAR. These are the mice most closely linked to human “couch potatoes.” When they were given this drug, their running time improved by 23% and their running distance improved by 44%! What makes these results even more impressive is the lazy mice improved in both muscle tone and endurance, without ever performing any activity!
Studies have demonstrated that AICAR actually changes the physical composition of the muscles! Muscles that previously were categorized as “sugar-burning fast-twitch fibers” transformed into “fat-burning slow-twitched fibers.” What does that mean to the average layperson? The muscles demonstrated the same changes that occur in athletes trained as distance runners and cyclists!
While you might think these studies are especially appealing to the “couch potatoes” of the world, doctors are most excited about the potential benefits to those people who are unable to exercise. Imagine those who are sedentary, not by choice, but due to joint pain, long hospital stays, and other circumstances that keep them from being active.
Besides the obvious weight loss advantage, this new “exercise pill” shows other promising benefits. Lower blood sugar levels, less resistance to insulin, and less muscle wasting are a few, in addition to a decreased risk of diabetes and heart disease.
While this research has many wonderful benefits, Dr. Evans is quick to point out one potentially negative aspect. These drugs may prove to be irresistible to some professional athletes looking for an edge. Because of this, detection tests are already being developed for use by the World Anti-Doping Agency.
So, will these impressive results transfer from mice to humans, and if so, how long before we can sign up? That information is still pending, but this research is exciting enough that people will be waiting on the edge of their seats for answers.
Incentive programs are given to deserving employee’s or students in exchange for their above and beyond performance of their duties. This can be given either by money or any material gift or by recognition.
Incentive programs help increase productivity and helps motivate other employee’s to strive harder. This gives them a sense of accomplishment, making them strive more and be examples to other employee’s and students. This also in effect give out a positive attitude and yet with a healthy working environment.
Incentive programs are designed to reciprocate positive internal or external attitudes displayed either by the employees (i.e. consistent early birds in the workplace) or by the customers or clients, like customer loyalty. It is non-verbal communication that tells the end receiver that the positive traits he or she is continually displaying - such as work ethics, mastery of tasks, diligence or commendable performance - did not go unnoticed.
Incentive programs are designed to rewards those who are performing above and beyond the average expectation, as they are made to inspire others to do the same, ultimately making the company not just more productive, but also teeming with positive and professional attitude. There are several ways for designing incentive programs. These designs may be based on point programs (i.e. points being earned for point-generating achievements with the accumulation of points equivalent to rewards) or sales incentives (i.e. reaching, and if possible, breaking of sales quota), for example.
Award programs provide numerous categories for the awards they hand out to employees. Some, like awards for milestones in service tenure, will take a long time and require dedication and loyalty. Still, there are awards that do not take very long to accomplish, including annual awards for performance-based recognition.
