Today there are many car rental companies but in its infancy, rental car companies were a luxury and only a few companies existed. Agencies were located in large metropolitan cities, not at airports like they are today and there were few companies that branched out internationally. This changed with Avis Rent A Car.

Avis Rent A Car was one of the first rental car agencies and it started with an aggressive business plan which proved successful. Avis has maintained its status as an industry leader and, in many ways, has kept an edge on the competition. Here is a short history of Avis and how they revolutionized the car rental industry.

Small Beginnings

Warren Avis opened Avis Rent A Car in Detroit, Michigan at the Willow Run Airport in 1946. With less than $100,000 he opened the first car rental business located at an airport; a risky move with a considerable amount of money at the time. He wanted to grow fast while providing excellent customer service. Warren Avis’ marketing plan was successful and he soon opened a rental office at the Miami Airport. He decided to expand his business internationally and soon started selling Avis franchises in Canada, Mexico and Europe. His company was making money and expanding rapidly.

Avis Sells

Warren Avis had created a successful business based on a revolutionary idea. He sold his business in 1954 to a Boston businessman for $8 million; a staggering profit in less than 10 years. The Avis name had established itself in the US and worldwide and become a respected company. Therefore, the Avis name remained and even after changing hands many times, continues on even today.

Growing Fast

Avis Rent A Car opened up its European headquarters in Britain in 1960. In just a short time it had become an international company owned by a large holding company. The holding company soon branched out and developed additional business interests.

In 1963 Avis adopted the slogan “We Try Harder” and developed an ad campaign around it. It proved to be such a successful slogan that it continues on today and has become one of the most recognized in the industry.

Avis Today

Now Avis Rent A Car is one of the most widely known and respected rental agencies in the world. From the meager beginnings of a rental agency at one airport to a multi-million dollar company, Avis has proved that its strategy has worked and continues to do so.

Next time you rent a car, rent with one of the most recognized and successful rental companies. To book a car, call their reservation department or book online. You’ll see why they have been so successful and why customers keep coming back.

Employees can’t help but become tired and exhausted from working all the time. Usually, they feel physically and emotionally worn out from all the stress they undergo. To help boost their spirits, many corporate managements decide to give little “rewards” to their people. These come in the forms of incentive gifts. Usually simple, but useful, incentive gifts are presents given to workers. It’s a great way of thanking them for a job well done in the workplace. Teams or individuals who met business goals superbly can receive these items. Incentive gifts are also given to everyone, if the company is in a celebratory mood, such as when they achieved successful tasks, such as surpassing a quota, extending a contract and winning accounts. When individuals from top management celebrate their birthdays, incentive gifts are also provided.

Important and festive holidays and occasions also involve incentive gifts. You’ll see these items during company anniversaries, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Loot bags or gift certificates are often given as incentive gifts.

Employees don’t have to pay anything when they get their incentive gifts. The budget for these items is often included in the company costs and its yearly projection. If the company has a partner company, the partner usually sponsors the incentive gifts. It’s a way of showing that they’re reaching out to the other company and is supportive of its projects. The partner company also uses this opportunity to advertise themselves.

There are also available corporate incentive gifts and companies specializing in producing and providing gifts for companies in need that offer a wide array of possible gifts to choose from. These companies also offer incentive gifts to be personalized with the company name and logo.

One important consideration when giving an incentive gift is to make sure it fits the need and personality of both the giver (company) and the receiver (employee or team). Factors to be considered include gender, preferences and personality. For example, a vegan employee wouldn’t be too happy if he or she receives an all-you-can eat certificate to a meat restaurant. A beauty shop gift certificate is a good incentive gift, but if it’s for a male employee, it would be laughable. The wrong incentive gift might become insulting rather than congratulatory.

Award programs are programs implemented and observed in organizations such as schools, offices, government services and the military. They seek to give recognition to individuals who did not just perform the duties expected of them, but performed their tasks in exemplary fashion over a specific period of time, contributing greatly to the success of the organization and the attainment of the goals set by the management. This type of reward system in practice in society is one of the oldest and most commonly used forms of recognizing excellence and outstanding achievement.

Individuals are exposed to award programs as early as their first year in formal education, as schools honor outstanding students who showed the highest aptitude in a subject or field of study. Awards are also given to those who excelled in extracurricular activities that gave the school honor, such as victories in sports or athletics meets, journalism, theatre, or subject specific competitions like math, English and science contests.

After years in school, individuals are still surrounded by award programs to which they may qualify and even actually win. Employment in either private groups or government agencies still presents chances for awards, and the same is true even when one is serving in the army.

There are many categories for awards that are handed out to employees through award programs. Some awards require individuals to stay with a company for a long time, as these kinds of awards celebrate an individual’s loyalty, dedication and long stay within a company or organization. There are also awards that do not take too long to garner, as these are performance based awards and recognize a person’s capacity to excel regardless of time.

Many manufacturing companies all around the world dedicate themselves to coming up with the awards for different awards programs. Production of award lapel pins, trophies, medals to the more expensive award rings and high-end watches are just some of the kinds of awards that are made available.

What better way to motivate your employees than to launch an incentive program. In exchange for providing gifts or honorary recognition for your employee, you get to complete your business goals and objectives. Aside from the corporate world, incentive programs can also be applied by teachers to their students, to spur them to study harder.

Incentive programs fuel the success of a company by satiating the drive and motivation of their employees. The policy also contributes to the individual success of each worker by helping them reach their professional goals. A good incentive program promotes a healthy and competitive environment, not cheating and backstabbing among co-workers.

Incentive programs are launched to incite positive internal and external attitudes from your employees and clients. These programs can inspire your people to arrive at work early, which could help attract more customers for you. It is similar to telling the employees who get rewarded that their excellent worth ethic, attitude, diligence and performance do not go unnoticed.

Be sure to only reward workers who perform above your expectations. Doing so will inspire others to produce similar, or even better work. Hopefully, the healthy competition would bring a positive, not a negative, attitude towards the profession.

With the growing popularity of incentive programs, some companies have focused on concentrating their business there. There are firms today that outsource incentive programs, including custom-made reward and recognition programs suitable to the personality of the company. However, there is always the venerable Human Resource department. This indispensable division itself can create a task force that could create an incentive program for the company.
