For thousands of years a great many of the islands found in the Western Isles of Scotland have been populated but during the last couple of centuries the population has declined drastically leaving only a few of the 200+ islands populated. Found off the west of Scotland in the Atlantic ocean, on the Isle of Lewis can be found the only town in the Western Isles, Stornoway.

Stornoway is a small fishing town with a population of around 28,000 people. At one time, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the population was only about 10,000 but during the herring fishing season this would quickly rise to just over 30,000 with thousands of fishermen and other workers taking up residence for the season. Today the fishing fleet is tiny by comparison but the highly active industry helps to add a great deal of interest to the town. Stornoway is, most probably, the best place to base yourself for a Hebridean vacation so we have listed below some of the most popular bed and breakfast accommodation available in the town.

The Caberfeidh Hotel has a long held reputation for being Stornoway’s finest hotel. The hotel is situated on the outskirts of town opposite the Lews Castle grounds on the road that heads over to the Isle of Harris.

The Royal Hotel is the town’s most historic hotel having first opened in 1850. Looking lovely from the outside the hotel has some period features in its luxurious rooms. The hotels HS1 cafe bar and Boatshed restaurant offer superb cuisine and prove very popular with locals and visitors alike.

The Caladh Inn is the town’s largest hotel with the most number of rooms. The Caladh Inn can be found a few minutes from the town center on the road out to Stornoway airport. Being so centrally located the Caladh Inn is popular with both tourists and business travelers.

Holm View Guest House is found about 15 minutes away from the center of Stornoway. This 4 star guest house offers some of the finest bed and breakfast in Stornoway and has an excellent reputation with numerous extremely positive reviews. As well as the guest house, bed and breakfast is also available in their luxurious Holm View Cottage.

The Thorlee Guest House is one of the most popular in Stornoway due to it’s competitive pricing and it’s most central location. The 3 star Thorlee may not be the most luxurious but it is certainly the most affordable accommodation available in Stornoway and a fine alternative to the much more expensive hotel accommodation.

Wherever you decide to stay in Stornoway you can be certain that you will experience some of the finest hospitality in the Western Isles (and maybe even the whole of Scotland). All of the accommodation mentioned in this article can be booked online very easily. It is always advisable to book your accommodation well in advance of your trip as it is very common for places in Stornoway to be fully booked at certain times of the year.
