You have probably seen those ads while surfing the net: \”make money at home\” or \”making money on the Internet.\” We mostly brush them off as scams or nonsense but on some occasions we are tempted to think, \”Is this really possible?\”
The world of affiliate marketing provides some definite advantages for a certain kind of person looking for a particular sort of opportunity. The basic idea behind affiliate marketing is easy to understand and has been around forever. You help people sell their products and services, and they give you a cut of the profits.
For example, you may have earned a referral reward from a business for bringing them a new customer. A company selling air conditioners might give you a cut of the profit they get when they make a sale on your recommendation; a car dealer might offer you a free tune-up or credit toward accessories. Affiliate marketing works on the same principle.
If you find the right product and a good strategy for bringing in sales, affiliate marketing can be a great source of income. And there are definite benefits to working as an affiliate marketer instead of at a usual job. But it isn’t fast money, or easy money. You have to work as hard at affiliate marketing as you do at any other job, if you want to be successful.
There is a clear upside to affiliate marketing beyond the pleasures of owning your own business and being your own boss. You are not tied to a specific product, so you can change your product and your strategies as you find out what works, with no loss of capital if the product doesn’t work out for you.
Affiliate marketers enjoy freedoms that are not even thinkable in any regular job. No nagging boss, no commute and absolute freedom over their time. They work when and where they want to. I know affiliate marketers who work 10 hours a week and I know others who work 60 hours a week. How much you work is really just a matter of priorities. If you’re making enough to live on at 10 hours a week, I say have fun the rest of the time.
It’s not all fun and riches, though. Those first few months can be really interesting, when you are trying to build up contacts and make your first sales. You may have some false starts and setbacks. And with no regular salary to count on, there is a definite risk to becoming a full-time affiliate marketer. You need to understand the risks, and decide if you can accept those risks.
You also have to be very self motivated and it helps to be organized. You control your work schedule, but that also means that no one is going to make you work when you need to, but don’t want to. You will have to be resourceful, creative, and willing to keep at it when sales are slow, which will be especially true in the beginning. Stick with it though, and the rewards are well worth it.
